Moving your career to Healthcare

Are you looking to change career and thinking that healthcare appeals, but you’re not qualified?

There are lots of career paths in healthcare, both clinical and non-clinical. Clinical largely requires formal qualifications and training, whereas non-clinical can be obtainable purely from your experience, skills and personality.

Skills learnt from many other roles and industries have transferrable attributes that can be used for a career in healthcare. Most of the time it’s not the ‘hard’ skills that you might immediately think of, such as working as part of a team, good communication or organisational skills. These are important and needed, but there are also the ‘softer’ personality traits which can make the difference. These include a high level of patience, emotional resilience, compassion, and passion to make an impact and help others. These can’t be taught, you’re either naturally those things, or you’re not. If you are, then a career in healthcare could be for you.

But why work in healthcare?

Making a positive impact every single day

Working in healthcare is the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Healthcare professionals are at the forefront of saving lives, providing comfort to the sick, and promoting overall wellbeing. Every day offers the chance to change lives and be a source of hope for service users and their families.

When you think of healthcare roles you may just think of roles such as nurses, doctors and support workers to name a few. However, healthcare roles are much broader than that, have you thought of catering or housekeeping? Or what about maintenance roles? There are a wide range of roles that provide indirect support that are all just as important; every meal cooked, every changed bed, every working light switch, all contribute towards delivering great healthcare.

There are multiple ways to work in healthcare whether you want to work in clinical or non-clinical roles. Anyone from any background or role can change to and progress in a healthcare role.

Another example is Debi Alcock, Registered Nursing Associate, who started her career as a Support Worker. With inspiration from family members, life events, experience working as a Support Worker and with the support of Elysium, Debi is now a qualified Nursing Associate who is now studying to become a Mental Health Nurse.

“To begin my training as a Nursing Associate, I needed my Maths and English GCSES at a A-C grade. At first, I was worried about being too old to go back to uni, but then I thought you can do anything you want in life; age shouldn’t hold you back and I have loved my Foundation Degree. I did one day a week of academic learning, and I was based at The Dean site doing work-based learning for the rest of the week. Within 18 months I became a qualified Nursing Associate. Elysium were so supportive throughout the time I was studying. The biggest burden when choosing to study is the financial costs, however this was all covered by Elysium and I was still paid my salary. This allowed me to excel in my career and remain a member of staff.”
